What is E-waste


Modern age can be described as the electronic age, on the lines of Stone Age, Iron stage and Bronze Age. A fleeting glance around us reveals the degree of electric and electronic equipments deployed in our daily routine. On one side they are putting our life on the fast track but on the other side they are posing as a great environmental threat. End of the life, discarded or outmoded equipments carelessly dumped contain highly hazardous contaminates like lead, cadmium, beryllium etc. which can cause severe health problems. These Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipments [WEEE] are termed as e-waste. The e-waste is emerging as a major crisis in developing and developed countries. It is categorized into three categories, large home appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, IT and telecom like PCs, laptops and mobiles and small consumer equipments like toaster, mixer grinder etc.

E-Waste The Problem
Lately electrical and electronic gadgets have become an indispensable part of our lives. We cannot dream of our existence without plugs, switches, wires, microchips and batteries. Our entity is trapped between flowing electrons. Apart from their numerous advantages, there are several disadvantages as well. Even after getting obsolete, improper dumping and dismantling can cause severe problems both to the environment and to the health. Pilling up of e-trash in the landfills causes leaching of hazardous contaminants in the soil and water-bodies. Global Reality

In developed countries like USA, 75% of the electronic equipments bought in past few years have been converted into e-waste. Of the total municipal waste generated in developed countries, about 1% tends to be WEEE which is expected to increase three folds in the next two years. E-waste amounts to 5-7 million tons per annum or 14-15 kg per capita in developed countries which is sure to increase several folds in the coming years. Developed countries offload their e-waste to countries like India for dismantling and disposal on account of liberal environmental laws and low cost of labor in these countries.

Indian Scenerio

India has already rising in the IT sector with leaps and bounds. In the last twenty years, it has shown exponential growth from 38% in 1998-99 to 62% in 2003-2004. India produces 1,46,000 metric tons of e-waste per annum which is estimated to rise to a whooping 8,00,000 metric tons per annum till 2012. PC industry´s growth is increasing by 25% compounded annual growth rate. Metro and mega cities in India contribute to about 65% of the total e-waste generated. Top 10 cities which account for e-waste generation, apart from the four metros, are Banglore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Surat and Nagpur. India does not have high scale recycling plant on the national level, though few small plants are situated in some cities. India is rapidly becoming a dumping ground for e-waste imported from developed countries like USA which is sure to breed several health and environmental hazards.

Due to constant upgradation in technology loads of e-waste is generated accompanying potential health hazard. On dumping those electronic equipments, we are thoughtlessly throwing away large recyclable resources. On upgrading to higher technology, old electronics equipments are dumped, though mostly they are functional and can be utilized by someone else with limited use. E-waste harvesting can be an opportunity that has to be explored in order to decrease the e-waste footprint of earth. Obsolete electronic equipments contain a fair amount of useful components which can be extracted to be reused in manufacturing new equipments. Reuse and recycling can be a complete resource generating process along with reduction in potential hazardous impacts of e-waste. The phenomenon ensures greater availability of e-equipments and appliances to larger population without recreation and dumping.

Every organization should chalk out a dynamic agenda for proper management of e-waste. A company should keep a check on the excess amount of e-waste generated and should probe the probable reasons behind it. Steps should be taken to promote reuse of the equipments to decrease dumping. A tie up with an authorized e-waste recycling company leads to organized destruction and recycling of e-trash generated. Regular awareness programmes should be organized to create proper understanding regarding the perilous effect of e-waste and need for its appropriate disposal. Time to time auditing of the generated e-waste should be carried on to promote the employees to follow a strict mandate.

Every individual can lend a hand in minimizing his/her e-waste foot print. This can be effectively done by following the three golden Rs of e-waste management, i.e. to reduce, to reuse and to recycle. An individual should be very specific in his choices when buying any electric or electronic equipment. He/She should go for the need of the product rather than buying it impulsively, out of affectation. Thus a person should reduce his wants. Next, if a technology gets old or outdated, still it could be useful for some with limited utility. Such equipments with obsolete technology should be donated to other people who could make use of it effectively in their work. This is the concept of reuse. Last but not the least, if equipment has to be discarded due to non-functioning, it should be handed over only to authorized recycling vendors for recycling, in order to avoid improper dumping.

Apart from following the three golden Rs, the necessity is to have adequate understanding regarding the negative impacts of e-waste. The next step is to create awareness among people educating them about hazards that can be caused by excessive accumulation of e-waste. Thirdly the generated e-waste, unfit for reuse should be handed over to authorized recycling vendors for disposal.
